Ehrlichiosis is a disease that develops in dogs after being bitten by an infected tick. In the United States, E. canis is considered endemic in the southeastern and southwestern states, though the brown dog tick is found throughout the United States and Canada. Ehrlichia are small, gram-negative bacteria, round or ellipsoidal in shape. They preferentially invade mononuclear phagocytes, such as monocytes and macrophages, and in some cases neutrophils. In all of these cell types they occupy cytoplasmic vacuoles, usually in bacterial microcolonies known as morulae. Ehrlichiosis is a bacterial illness that causes flu-like symptoms that include fever and aches.

Emptying a Dog's Ehrlichiosis is a tick-borne infectious disease of dogs, usually carried by the brown dog tick. It first gained attention as a significant disease when military dogs returning from Vietnam during the 1970's were found to be infected. The disease seems to be particularly severe in German Shepherd Dogs and Doberman Pinschers. Se hela listan på thesprucepets.com Ehrlichia. Ehrlichiosis is the general name used to describe diseases caused by the bacteria Ehrlichia chaffeensis, E. ewingii, or E. muris eauclairensis in the United States. These bacteria are spread to people primarily through the bite of infected ticks including the lone star tick ( Amblyomma americanum) and the blacklegged tick ( Ixodes scapularis ).

Blacklegged ticks also spread the infection. Rarely, blood transfusions or organ transplants infected with the bacterium have caused ehrlichiosis. Ehrlichia ruminantium, an obligatory intracellular rickettsia, is the causative agent of heartwater, a tick-borne disease that circulates throughout sub-Saharan Africa, the Caribbean and Indian Ocean islands [].Heartwater imposes a high economic cost to livestock industries since it induces high mortality (up to 80 %) in susceptible animals, especially goats and sheep []. Human Monocytic Ehrlichiosis (HME) was the first form of Human Ehrlichial infection recognized in the United States. The onset of symptoms usually occurs about three weeks after an individual has been bitten by a tick carrying the bacterium Ehrlichia chaffeensis.

Ehrlichia

Ehrlichia spp. are gram-negative, small, obligatory intracellular bacteria that primarily invade leukocytes of animals and humans. They appear as minute, round bacteria (cocci), about 1 µm in diameter. In the leukocytes, ehrlichiae divide by binary fission, developing from elementary to initial bodies to finally form vacuole-bound colonies known as morulae (plural for morula, Latin word for Ehrlichia are obligate, intracellular bacteria that are transmitted by ticks to humans.
